Practitioner Development

The UK Public Heath Register (formerly known as the UK Voluntary Register for Public Health Specialists) is working in collaboration with key partners in public health in developing the Public Health Register to include public health practitioners and public health advanced practitioners. The development draws from the recently published Public Health Skills and Career Framework.

Draft standards have been developed at the two levels – practitioner and advanced practitioner –
and are being tested with individuals likely to be working at these levels.

It is intended that the registration for practitioners will come into place at some point in 2009 although no firm decisions on timing have been made to date.

The Public Health Skills and Career Framework now launched

The public health skills and career framework brings together for the first time public health competences and knowledge across nine career levels in a user friendly format.  It is multi-disciplinary, UK-wide and applies to the public health workforce wherever they are based or by whomever employed.   For more information about the PHSCF and relevant documents, click here.

The framework has been endorsed by the four UK Departments of Health and has been sent to all the main UK public health professional bodies for their endorsement. Download here (pdf).

Public Health 08: Achieving Cultural Change
This event is complimentary to public sector

8th October 2008
The Barbican Centre, London.

"Obesity is the most serious threat to the future health of our nation"
Peter Littlejohns, Clinical and Public Health Director, NICE

The figures on the subject show just how serious health issues have become. According to the Department of Health:

  • A quarter of the adult population and one-fifth of children under the age of 16 are obese.
  • Weight problems currently cost the UK economy around £16bn, which could rise to £50bn by the year 2050.
  • From 2003 it is estimated that the cost of binge drinking was a further £20bn.

With heart disease now the biggest cause of death in the UK, and diseases such as diabetes becoming ever more common, it is clear that urgent action needs to be taken to halt such trends.

'Public Health 08: Achieving Cultural Change' will look at the ways in which the public sector has attempted to find solutions to these major issues, and the challenges that will be faced dealing with them in the future.
